Keshi gets Chelsea loan star Omeruo alert
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has been alerted to the exploits of young Nigerian defender Kenneth Omeruo in the Dutch top flight.
MTNFootball.com has specially gathered that Keshi has been asked to monitor the youth international, who has sparkled for Dutch club ADO Den Haag on loan from English Premier League club Chelsea.
The 18-year-old central defender has shone like a million stars playing in an unfamiliar right back position for the injury-hit Dutch side.
The former U17 star was one of the stand-out performers for Nigeria as the Flying Eagles marched to the quarterfinal of last year’s FIFA U20 World Cup in Colombia.
“Keshi has been told about Omeruo by several of his contacts in Europe. One of them said the player reminds him of Keshi during his secondary school days, supremely confident and commanding in defence,” a top team source informed MTNFootball.com
“The coach has promised to have a look at the player in a friendly soon.
“He will also get in touch with Mike Emenalo at Chelsea to tell him more about the player, who has been rated higher than the likes of Dele Adeleye. It was Emenalo who signed him for Chelsea.”
Omeruo had a chance to be part of the Nigerian team to the 2012 Olympic qualifiers in Morocco in November but opted out because he was then trying to sort out his future.
In another related development, Omeruo and his coach at Den Haag have differed on the best position for the highly-promising defender.
The former Nigeria U20 star has sparkled at right back for Den Haag with superb results that coach Maurice Steijn has said that is his best position.
However, Omeruo himself told MTNFootball.com he is better off as a central defender. It is a position he has played from for both Nigeria U17 and U20s.
“My coach has been most impressed with my performances and he thinks that right back is my best position. But I don’t agree,” said the player, who interestingly started out as a striker.
“I’m sure that my best position is in central defence because I like to take on more responsibilities.
“But I’m also comfortable playing as a defensive midfielder.”
